Default Rod suggestions for the Santa Fe area

Can anyone offer suggestions as to the size of rod to use for day trips (2 to 3 drive) in the Santa Fe, NM area. I have a 9' 5 weight which I have read may be too long and heavy for the smaller streams in the area.

I would look at a short 3-weight or 2-weight, something in the 7'-7'6" range.

Depending on the streams you fish in the area, you may end up with open casting on a meadow stream, or hemmed in by brush. The fish are pretty small, typically 6"-8", though you will pull some larger ones out in the 12"+ range.

Save the 9' 5-weight for your side trip to the San Juan.

My favorite method for small stream fish is tenkara. Just so effective. Perfect drifts, makes the small fish fun.

Stop by “The Reel Life” fly shop while there! Great shop. Those are home waters to me and I typically use a 8’6” 4wt. Honestly if you only have a 9’ 5wt you could get by in the Pecos just fine.

That 5 weight rod should be good. Ask at High Desert Angler and they can tell you more what would be better. Don't spend anything If you don't need to. High Desert Angler and The Reel Life are both same owner.

I've fished the Santa Fe area extensively over the last 20 years. Favorite rods for the waters are a 8'6" 3 wt Scott G and a 9' 4wt Asquith. Depending on the water - some of the smaller water the shorter length is nice but often find myself look for that extra 6 inches especially when trying to high stick some of the pocket water.

I've fished the area with a 8'6" 5wt with no issues. It might not be ideal to use a 9' but unless you are looking for an excuse to buy a new rod it will work.

Slight correction to an earlier post...Jarrett Sasser owns High Desert Angler, and Nick Streit owns The Reel Life and Taos Fly Shop.
