We have had about half a dozen swaps that began and then never finished. People who mailed flies did not receive any returns, swap coordinators dropped from the forum, people complained, etc.

That is why we have tried to have some measure of control over how many swaps are running at any given time and who is running them.

Any members who want to swap flies can easily contact one another using the Private System. They can agree on all details and carry on the swaps out of the public eye. This way only the individuals involved see the results. I have been involved with small private swaps several times and things went fine.

The idea of this thread was to measure the level of consensus or objection to the idea of not having swaps all summer. If it is met with overwhelming objections we will certainly reconsider this.

That seems to be a problem every fly tying forum that has fly swaps experiences but they don't shut down because of a minor glitch. Swappers pick up the pieces and move on with the next swap. I've been in a couple of failed swaps and I continue to swap. The world is still spinning.

But it your website and I'm sure you'll do what's best.

Fine with me to postpone until the Fall.

I was thinking about running a Streamer Swap; but with mid-May approaching, we wouldn't get them back out to everyone before the middle of June; which might be late; almost into terrestrials by that time in some parts of the country.

I think if someone were to start one and get people to go along with it, why not? We can't force any to do or not do anything and shouldn't try.

Why do the Summer ones need to be secret? Lord knows we get about a million less interesting things posted here.

secret swaps are a good sign of snobbery towards all swappers as they would indicate the swapmeister would only invite certain people to participate in his swap. not a good way to run fly swaps.

fly swaps should be open to every tyer that wants to participate.

i have only been in 1 swap on this forum. i too was thinking about host a swap but after seeing how swaps are run here, it may not happen.

off season swaps (i really didnt know there was a season called fly tying) might be smaller in size but that is not necessarily a bad thing or a reason to stop fly swaps. they are actually kinda nice to participate in.

seems to me you would want to grow this forum not stifle it. you can apply rules to swaps and forums but they should not drive people away.

Ard & Larry It doesn't really worry me a great deal one way or The Other as I've missed 3 of The Last 4 swaps.

Certainly, no need to apologize, Larry.

It's a very good topic; particularly given the situation that we faced just about this time last year with one person running, essentially, all of the swaps, and there is a lot to be said for the fact that as we head into the busy Summer period, time for anything, simply gets more difficult to come by.

I'd suggest that if someone want to start up a swap, than they do that and if there are swappers that are interested in it and if it fills, then let it run. We've had a great history this year of getting swaps filled and completed on time and we've had some really nice patterns tied up by the swap members.
