Good info above so won't repeat. That said if you are going to use floss (or just thread) in the tie put on a layer of silver foil first. Most colours fade out when wet, over the silver they will 'glow in the dark.'

Let me make sure I understand something here.

Folks mention that there are some problems with 'floss thread.' Apparently, it can be frayed just by touching it with rough fingers.

Again, as I understand it, floss thread is flat, multi-strand with little or no twist.

But, there is also 'thread' that is flat, multi-strand stuff. Is this regular 'thread' different from floss thread? Thread doesn't have as many problems and doesn't fray so easily as floss?

Read this - Floss vs. Thread

I'm not the floss expert. I'll have to look at what the heck I have now at home. I think it's Rayon 4 strand floss. Like I said I bought it 30 years ago before there were a jillion options. There's now silk, uni-flex, single strand, 4 strand, fluorescent, acetate, even sexi-floss......

You can see there are oodles of tinsel, floss, wire and threads.....

Fly Tying Thread, Danville, UNI & Veevus | J. Stockard

Confused yet? I am.....

I'm sorry I mentioned it now..... forget I ever did. Please.

Thanks to Fred for the underwrap w/ tinsel tip...... I did not know that one.

Has my confusion confused everyone yet?

I thank you flytie09 for mentioning floss.

I now know that we are not talking about dental floss, though even it has some uses.

I have found a couple of articles comparing floss and thread. I haven't gone over them closely yet but, I gather that floss and thread are similar. Very basically, floss is generally used to build bodies, and thread is used to hold things together.

I like the flat thread that I've seen, but I want to avoid some of the problems of 'floss thread.'

I will look more into that Veevus thread which apparently is a bit of a compromise between a flat thread and a woven thread. At some time in the future I can get a spool of flat thread and a spool of floss thread, and see how they compare.

Thanks folks.
