Question Magnifying glass for fly tying

    Hi
Just tied my first dry fly following Davie McPhail’s YouTube video instructions for the Red Tag dry fly.
I used a #14 hook and will try it on a #16 later.
Davie uses a #20 in his video ... He must have hawk eyes!
And here comes the question: do any of you use a magnifying glass while tying? I wear glasses, so I can’t use the systems you fit on your nose, plus I want to be able to grab my materials and tools easily without having to remove a piece of equipment from my head/face. So I was thinking something attached to the vise or on a stand with a flexible arm..
Any you would recommend for its ease of use and affordable price?
Thanks a lot in advance for your suggestions

    PS
Here is a pic of my fly. I messed up with the length of the two strands of erl : too short. So I ended up with an anorexic thorax compared to the rest of the body ...

The amount of light is critical. Use the brightest light you have or even 2 lights.

Your eye can be thought of as a camera with the retina as the film. In a camera, before autofocus was invented, I had to use a light meter to see what lens opening (f stop) and what shutter speed I had to use to get the right exposure. The more open the lens (lower f stop) the faster the shutter speed I could use to get the correct exposure.

The problem is that the more open the lens, the less the depth of field and some of the parts of the image would NOT be in focus. I needed a less open lens (higher f stop) to get a greater depth of field and more of the photo in focus.

Your eye is like that. The brighter the light, the more the pupil is contracted and more of what you actually see will be in focus. So you want a lot of light so all of the vise, the fly, the thread and everything is in sharp focus. That way your eye muscles do not have to change the shape of your lens as much as you go from fly, to materials, to bobbin, etc.
    Regards,

I use an old school model of what Wallace linked you to, mine has 3 small florissant light tubes in it and I began using it way back in the 1990's. You would be amazed at how much better detail one can produce on a size 18 or 20 dry fly hook with the addition of light & magnification.

I have it securely attached to the back on my little work table with screws. I never tie or make loops without it.

You can see (I hope!)most of the light I use in this pic. These used to be very easy to find-the last two I bought I found in thrift stores. There is a magnifying glass in the head and a flip-up cover (which I removed). I looked a year or so back ( the last time this question came up) and at that time you could still find them on line for about $30.00
I changed out the bulb in this one from incandescent to LED. Brighter, whiter, cooler.

I believe this is made by or made for Orvis-2 goose neck vise mounted lamp with magnifier.

Once you get your lamp, you'll wonder how you lived without it. With the brighter view of the fly you are tying, I don't think you'll need magnification.

My wife bought me the giraffe light magnifier combo and I love it. I just added a second light this year, an LED happy light.
