ok what size line for a bamboo fly rod?8 1/2 foot.
something that floats and long casting

There are a ton of variables, but I would start with a WF6F.

A 6 weight line is a good start, as Bakerloo stated.

Go to a local shop and try the rod with a few line weights. Most shops have reels spooled up with demo lines. After a few minutes in the parking lot, you should have an idea which line works the best with your rod.
