Good points all. I recall a bit of research on this subject and in short it showed that when plenty of insects and minnows were present trout moved from almost strictly insectivore to almost strictly piscivore as they grew in length. Also the size of the minnows and small fish eaten increased as the trout fell into bigger and bigger classes. It's a dog eat dog world out there and I'm sure that bigger trout will go for most bigger flys if that type of insect or minnow is found in the waters you are fishing and at times even if it isn't. Matching the hatch workes best when hatches are large, varied and homongenous, etc. Known piscavores are big brookies, landlockeds, browns, bulls, dollys and lakers but even big Rainbows go almost strictly piscivore at times.
