Thread: what's for lunch?...... (photos inside)

Default what's for lunch?...... (photos inside)

today, i felt like pikin'... got to the river and was ecstatic at how clear it had gotten.... good bye runoff blues.... grabbed my 8wt and pretty much sprinted to the fishing hole.... sure enough they were there... they're always there, no matter how many of them i bring home to the dinner table... they keep coming back, year after year after year. there were six in that hole that i could see... probably a whole lot more in the deepest parts.... some 18 inchers. some 30 inchers. one guy looked to be at least 36 inches.... all just sitting.... waiting....

    first some scenery shots:
the lower bitterroot river.....oh so nice.

visibility was good... i could see a bunch of fat trout just sitting in the slow current. every few minutes a snout would break the surface... i didn't know what they were eating.... they're lucky i was after northern pike today.

the northerns weren't very cooperative today... it was too hot and bright out... but persistence paid off..... 29 inches:

    O mykiss

Your title is Most Excellent... Great pictures and what a beautiful fish. I have never caught a pike but can only imagine after hook set they must turn into real snot slingers (rodeo bulls).

(photos inside)...lol You certainly took advantage of my addiction for fish porn.

I was going fly fishing until my wife suggested it, now I can't tell who is outsmarting who!

Being "one with nature" requires a knowledge of what animals are living nearby and a weapon of sufficient magnitude to give you at minimum an equal chance of survival. No one has an invisible aura that animals can detect and sense your good intentions.

I had northern pike for breakfast on a canoe trip through the Boundary Waters. It was spectacular.

Nice scenery in your pics, and a nice fish! What kinda fly dragged in the catch? I assume streamers are your typical fare for northerns?

I've heard about pike on the lower Bitterroot and seen then on a certain back channel of the Clark Fork but have never targeted them. Is that pike hole your secret? Because if it is I won't even ask.

I have caught pike since fishing some Canadian bush lakes more than 15 years ago. That was spin fishing.

yup... they're in the bitterroot, clark fork, bitterroot, blackfoot, clearwater.... everywhere....

i've told a lot of folks about this pike hole... the thing is, it's right upstream from a boat launch so when folks get in the river, they head downstream and dont even know there are a bazillion northerns lounging around just 15 yards behind them. i can tell you if you want to know....

i just started targeting them a couple years ago.... used to be i'd be throwing some PMDs and elk hair caddis to finicky trout and just 10 yards from me would be a 3 foot long northern ..... i wanted that beast on the end of my line.
