    Default roll casting

Gear aside, what is the difference between roll and spey casting?

First I will mention the similarity. Both roll casts and Spey casts involve using the surface tension to load the rod.

But there are two types of Spey casts. There are the underhand styles of Spey casting which are basically roll casts. There is an overhand style in which the line is water loaded, picked up, and shot. That style of cast is not a roll cast.

    That pretty much says it.

Spey Casting is different in that it allows the angler to change casting directions.

Also, in most single spey casting, though not skagit casting, the fly and leader are lifted from the water.
