Thread: I'm considering going to North Dakota

Default I'm considering going to North Dakota

I may be going to ND for a while, around the Williston area, for work. I like to know about stream wading areas for cold and warm water fishin'.
Are there any ND fly fisherman familiar with the northwest of ND?
    Thanks,
    Rick

I can't say I am familiar with the fishing in the area but I certainly know about the work! Anyway streams are few and far between. For running water you have the Yellowstone and the Missouri although the confluence is over in Montana but it is not far away. Other than that you have a few ponds and small lakes here and there as well as Sakakawaea. I have heard it has good walleye but no idea about trout.
Not the best area for river fishing. I would say head to Montana.

Don't plan on doing much wade fishing around Williston. That's pretty much all you need to konw.

The Bighorn River in MT is about 4.5 hours from Williston. The tailrace below Garrison Dam on Lake Sakakawea is another place and is about a 2.5 hour drive. The MO in ND is a big river with limited access so wading is tough below the dam. There are a few small trout lakes around Williston.

Williston is crazy right now. A town of what was 12,000 people has about 15,000 job openings. The nearest town of anything over a few thousand people is 120 miles away. A high paying job is easy but a place to sleep is very tough. If you dont have that lined up do not go. It's a modern day gold rush and everything that comes along with that, good and bad.

    Thanks Guys,
I'm used to livin' far away from everything but huntin' and fishin'. Closest Sears or Super wally world is 62 miles away.
I'm lookin' at takin' a 5th wheel camper with me, but I know come winter I'll have to upgrade.
I kinda figured it was all big water up there, terrible thing if I have to get a boat.
