Default Leader and tippet

So I have been trying to nymph fish on and off with very little success. I just had some questions that I was hoping someone could answer. I know tippet size a lot of time is determined by the fly size but could it also be used by the weight of the fly too?

Default Re: Leader and tippet

Are you asking if the size of the tippet should be determined by the weight of the fly as well as the size of the fly? If so...
Possibly; You may want to use heavier tippet if you are fishing several weighted nymphs and additional split shot. Especially if you must make long casts.
Generally, fish are not deterred by heavier leader when nymphing. Nymphs may fish more actively and look more natural when fished on lighter tippet. Most will agree that effective nymphing requires at least occasional contact with the stream bed resulting in snags and breakoffs. These are some considerations in selecting tippet size.
Also consider flourocarbon. It's a bit thicker than regular mono tippet of the same break strength, but it's less visible in water and sinks more readily and so requires less added weight.
