Everytime I post a pic of chub on the forum some of you are surprised by the size of the fish we have here.Big chub are very exciting to fish because they are very spooky(that's why they get old:D)their cone of vision is wider and their abitlity to feel vibrations is better than the ones of trout. We fish them on sight either on dry(usually Batistou special) or on nymph(chub special:D)It's not rare to catch fish between 20' and 24'....:)last week I hooked the "chub of the year" but I couldn't land him :(....
Here are some pics of big guys. You'll notice some are silver others golden...

Re: Chasing big chub.....

Hello JP,

Congratulation to that pretty nice chub :clap::clap:

We have similar sizes in my "home river Dill", but as you already mentioned, they are extrmely sensitive and it not easy to catch such a nice fish. I am always sneaking along the river and mostly I get one with a long distance cast with a big nymph or a fat dry fly.

Re: Chasing big chub.....

There were some big chub in Pine Creek and the West Branch Susquehanna River at the mouth of Pine Creek when I fished those places JP. Usually I caught the biggest ones on streamers but have no photos of them. The fish you are catching are huge for small stream chub.

Is chub a good eating fish ? Our chubs just dont get very big,,,,mostly 6 inches or so..not much more than that. Are chubs a good eating fish ? The chubs here,,we seine and use on lay-lines for catfish. (Yep, I have a little redneck in me at times LOL,,actually, I just love eating catfish) The chub you guys are showing,,just boggle my mind,,I had no idea they got that huge.

Re: Chasing big chub.....

Hello Chub Specialists,

We have guy over here, who loves to eat the chubs. But he perpares something like a fish burger from the meat and I can tell you that these burgers are fantastic. Here I will try to explain the recipe:

1. Cut the filets and sprinkle them with fresh lemmon juice. Then pack them for a while into the fridge.

2. Grind the filets together with some pieces of bacon, onion, white bread and parsley.

3. Mix this mass with egg, salt, pepper and maybe some flour so that it becomes a little bit sticky.

4. Form some meatballs (flat disks => diam. 3", thickness aprox. 1") and fry them in butter in a pan.

Hope you will get an idea about the recipe, I did it just one time, but it was really unexpected good :)

Re: Chasing big chub.....

Hello JP,

You are welcome - it was a pleassure :) We do have many chubs in our river and they get too much. Now, I decided to take some out, but I do not like to kill a creature without any use. Because of that I will lay down some of the smaller chubs to feed the wild pigs or the foxes. Some big ones I will take to prepare meat balls :fishing:

Great fish JP. I actually gained a great deal of respect for the Chub after watching a show recently about them. In fact I sent JP a PM mentioning it to him as he is the resident Chub Master. Chub as big as the one JP has there are not common and they are hard to catch. Seriously, a 5 pound Chub the way the show made it sound was like the Holy Grail of Chub fishing. :worthy:

Thanks for posting that.

I should also say that in that same show, they caught Dace, which when small are almost identical to Chub. There is a way using one of the fins. One curves in, the other out.

My mother grew up eating whatever her family caught out of the creek. Trout, chub, and sucker all went into the skillet equally. She claims her father preferred chub over trout.
