  1. Question Lamson Konic II Reels and Original Konic Spools

New to the forum. 1st post, so bear with me. I'm also a newbie to fly fishing, but I am hooked (pardon the pun).

I have purchased a Konic II Reel and saw an original Konic spool on clearance, so I bought it. It seems to fit and work, but does anyone know of any reason I shouldn't pair a Konic II reel and an original Konic spool? It doesn't look like anything changed but the metal used in manufacturing.

I'm pairing this reel (size 2) with my Winston GVX 9' 5wt rod. I can't wait for the ice to melt here in the Rockies so I can start chasing fish.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Fjimbof: Welcome to the forum!

I can't help with the Konic reel question, but don't forget about the superb tailwater fishing to be had while waiting for the rivers to unfreeze, just plan on using small midges, scuds, mysis shrimp, sow bugs and bwo patterns or maybe throw a streamer for a change up.

Thanks for the info Larry. One of my favorite spots outside the Denver area is Cheesman Canyon. I'll try and get out there a couple more times before my license expires in March!

    welcome to the forum fjimbof!
    good group of folks here
in regards to your question, the konic spools in the gen. 1 and gen. 2 are the same. lamson just put a different finish on the gen. 2 reel body. they are totally interchangeable.

Thanks Casey. That's what I had assumed. I just wanted to make sure and not ruin one or both of them if there was some structural change as well.

    Similar question...

I bought a Lamson Konic 2.0 (not the II) and one extra spool last year. I'm thinking about buying a few more in different weights.

Can I fit different sized spools on my original spindle/cage?? Can I fit a Konic 3.5 spool on a Konic 2.0 reel????

    Thanks.

    Hi,

    Welcome to the forum!

I'm not a Konic user but I will say no. I did own a Velocity 3.5 and it was a 3 1/2" reel if I remember, suitable for a 7 weight rod.

I don't know if this helps but I have a Konic 2 and a Konic 4 and no way are they interchangeable! So my guess would be neither would the 3.5. Oh and welcome to the forum!

    Thanks for the info, all~!

I wanted to wait until my order got processed before sharing (grin) and I just got the email that my order has been shipped so here you go.

Lamson Konic 2.0 Spare Spool for a 2.0 Reel

Bought two additional Lamson Konic 2.0 spools for $102 shipped. I don't think I'll ever need 4 spool setups, but what the heck. For $50 per spool to my mailbox, I won't pass it up.

They also have a 3.5 spare for $49 and an entire 1.5 reel for $89. I'd have bit on the 1.5 reel if I could find extra spools on the cheap for a future short n' light 3-4wt rod I don't yet have.
