Default Fly-rod-in-the-mouth pictures?

Hey what's that deal with this?

Spinning rod guys don't suffer from their neurosis as far as I can tell. Is it to provide proof that you actually were able to hook and land a fish on a fly rod?

That's old school.
Now you need to balance the rod on your shoulder while hiding your face.
Preferably with a "buff"

(This one is from 18 years ago )

You are partially right...I do like to note in pictures with the rod in mouth thing that a fish (especially a large or cool species) was caught on the fly.

It's also a matter of function when wading. When you knee deep in water, you have two choices - the first is dropping the rod in the drink or doing the RTM (rod to mouth) pose or balancing it on your shoulders.

So it's not because fly fishermen like the taste of slime coat?

The wading thing makes sense honestly.....touche.

I just am kind of....weirded out by the mouth/rod thing. It's kind of wonky.

I'm pretty sure you put things in your mouth all the time and the most you know about it is where you bought it... not who packaged it, prepared it, and if they made sure to follow the instructions "Employees Must Wash Hands Before Returning To Work"... Fish Slime seems less scary now.. don't it?
