Default organizing fly boxes

with all the flies I have acquired over the winter (about 18 dzn or so), I need to sit down and put them all away. Just curious how all of you organize your boxes?

Default Re: organizing fly boxes

I typically organize my flies by wet, streamer, dry, nymph, and then by bug type, ie. mayfy, stonefly, caddis, attractors, ect

For example I have two nymph boxes. One has PTN & varitations and GRHE & variations. The other I have Stone fly nymphs, caddis nymphs, soft hackles & variations, and then attractor nymphs.

I also have a dry box, separated in the same ways, then also a streamer box, ect.

Good luck getting your boxes organized!

Me too, except I fish at a variety of very different places. So I make up separate boxes as go-to flies (favorite flies for each place).

Obviously, saltwater locations have separate boxes. But, even for trout, the flies for Yellowstone are very different from the flies for the Smokies. In those go-to boxes I separate favorite nymphs (left side of box) from dry flies (right side); one box of favorites that I think I'll try there first.

I find that I like having ONE go-to box in my pocket when I'm wading. Backup boxes and such are in a less-accessible pocket or in my backpack. If the fish aren't biting, I get to those boxes soon enough.

Check this thread called Members Fly Boxes

As has been said, many of us fish in different types of water & for various species so our boxes are organized (or not) based on individual needs.
The various boxes displayed in the above thread should give you some excellent ideas of how others organize.

I (currently) organize mine by fly "type" somewhat like rccola712 describes above (nymphs, wets, dry's, streamers, etc.). Looking through an old issue of Fly Fisherman a couple weeks back I came across an article featuring Rene Harrop's fly boxes and noticed that he organizes by "hatch" which I thought was a cool idea.

For example in his Pale Morning Dun (PMD) box he'll have one (1) row each for; nymphs, emergers, cripples, duns, spinners, etc. This way when he switches flies during a hatch he's always accessing the same box.

Really, there's no wrong way to do it... whatever works best for you is the best way to do it.
