    Default Lipping largemouth, am I doing it wrong?

    So maybe this is a stupid question, but is there an appropriate way to lip a largemouth other than just grabbing its damned lip? The reason I ask is because of the teeth. I'm not bothered by the smaller LMB, as their teeth are basically just sandpaper, but the bigger ones have little needles can give you a good shredding and even draw some blood if they wiggle a lot.

    Am I grabbing the lip in the wrong place, or is this just how it is and people just put up with shredded thumbs like I've been doing?

    Are you sure it's a LMB and not a Barracuda? Just grab the lower lip, get the hook out and release. I always judge a good day on the pond if my thumb is scuffed up a bit. I don't think I've ever had one draw blood, but YMMV. Keep the bass vertical, don't try to make the bass horizontal without supporting the belly, as this can actually break/damage the jaw of the fish. If you are really worried about it, wrap some hockey tape around your thumb or wear gloves.

    That's called bass thumb. Don't hate it, embrace it

    Stick that thumb in there proudly and show off that shredded thumb skin to all you know.

    Normally I'll give my thumb a couple wraps of electrical tape if I start to catch larger bass. The water gets to it eventually though and it starts to peel off and catch the line.

    yep nothing like a good case of bass thumb.its a badge of honor. as mentioned dont flex your wrist you can damage the fishes jaw.

    Yeah I try never to do that. It even LOOKS super painful for the fish.

    I agree with the others about "bass thumb" being a badge of honor, but don't forget to stick a Band-Aid on it when you get home along with some antibiotic ointment. There are some really nasty bacteria floating around these days, both in fresh water and salt water.
