  1. Question Fly Tying Tools ??

I am curious to ask how many of you may make some of your fly tying tools, or just simply go to the nearest shop & buy some ? I know some of the tools maybe too difficult, but was still curious.

I just recently started tying tube flies & did end up making several tying mandrels from coat hangers of different diameter wire. Also made a simple dubbing twister tool from plastic coated wire. (by the way this one is so simple to make, only a couple of bends & your done.) It's also easy to make thread racks, dubbing teasers (from velcro wrapped around a dowel rod)

How about you tying arsenal, any homemade stuff ?

The only tool I have made is a rotary dryer for completed flies. I just finished tonight and have dried 4 flys. works good.

In the past I've used a hook for dubbing loops made from a coathanger. Since I can't seem to find my Dubbit tool, I may be making another soon.

I'd rather hunt fish than bait deer any day.

I have a bodkin which is my wife sewing needle stuck thru a popper body with a drop of super glue, works great. I was using an old desk light with a magnifying glass c clamped to it, but i have upgraded to a lighted magnifier on a doudble arm which works much better. I still use old styrofoam packaging to stick flys on to dry. I have 2 hair stackers made from plastic pipe (I am a plumber). I also use the outer part of a bic pen to pack deer hair when spinning.
I don't always fly fish but when I do I prefer salt water. Stay salty my freinds

    Hi tye one on,

I was wondering how you were doing with your tube flies. If you tye a lot of tubes the HMH Tube holder would be a worth while investment. The holder fits into any vise that will hold a 2/0 hook. You can also buy machined mandrels that fits the HMH tubes.

I actually did purchased the HMH tube mandrel you pictured in
your reply, but unfortunately it did not fit my Peak vise like I had
hoped. The "pin" had an interference issue, so I will be returning
it to my local shop. In my research for tying tube flies I came
across info about a tapered pin, so I actually used coat hanger
wire, my grinder & made my own tapered tying mandrel pins.
They work great in my vise & I have tied up about 8-10 tube
flies which I hope to get a chance to use once the rivers settle
down a bit. Also, the tube fly items at my local shop were a little
too high $$ for me so I did some more research & found a nice
fly shop in Oregon that has good prices & that's were I picked up
my supplies. (Fly fishing equipment - fly-fishing tackle, fly fishing rods, fly fishing reels...) These flies are fairly easy to
tie & you can pretty much tie any pattern on them. Check it out.
I'll try to get some pics posted soon.

    Hi Tye One On,

Thanks for your report. I will be looking for you pictures.

I wonder what you did to have your last post bunched up like it did. Did you do anything different?

Most, if not all, times I include a website address in my
threads it comes out doing what you noticed.

If it did not come thru try looking at this website fot
tube fly supplies, wwwflyfishusacom. I left out the
periods so it will come thru.
