Thread: Italian Fly Casting Technique

  1. Default Italian Fly Casting Technique

I've just been watching a DVD on the "Italian Fly Casting Technique." Looks like it has some good ideas, and it certainly produces some beautiful casts. Any opinions or insights?

That sounds interesting ! For those of us who haven't seen the video, what are the techniques, and which did you find most useful ? How do they differ ftom the techniques we are familiar with ?

OK, the DVD is "The Italian Style of Casting" by Massimo Magliocco. You cast in 2-deminsional plane, no pauses, always keeping contact with the line. Usually you cast at a 45 degree angle...or flatter. You use a modified (minimized) double haul. Like a traditional cast, you do a variety of casts off of this stroke.

That's about as good as I can do. There's a school in England that teaches it.

I tried to watch that video, but two minutes of the music had me ready to blow my brains out.

You lasted 23 seconds longer than me. I didn't see anything special in the first minute thirty seven...

The music is shocking. Why, why oh why do video makers subject us to this?!

For such short casts there seemed to be far too much arm movement. Much wasted energy from where I was sitting!

I agree I've also watched it & noticed they caught a few Fish whilst demonstrating their method ???
I also liked where one of The Guys in another Video changed Hands to give The Fly an extra metre or so Drift also nothing new.
I Think most of us at times have used similar methods in The same type of environments with shorter Leaders.

Watched (a partů) of the promo video on Youtube again.
The 'music' is horrendously distracting as well as irritating.

Jeez, lots of unnecessary flipping & circle casting before ending up with a regular back castů
The forward cast is usually sideways aimed lower.

So, what's the idea of this Italian casting?
