Power Pro braided line is a good alternative.

Spent a week in the Bahamas last month and took more trips into the backing in just a few days than I had in my entire fishing life. Bonefish are simply wonderful.

Paracord ? No. Waaaaaay too fat. You won't be able to put enough length on the spool to be of any use as backing.
Save yourself a lot of time and effort. Just buy a spool of backing

Hmm. I have to admit I've never considered the cost of backing. But I'm pretty sure one of the shops I go to charges something like a nickel a foot. Also, my last three or four line purchases were from one shop where they provide the backing for free if you buy the line from them, so I haven't paid for backing in a while.

So, I guess I have to ask, just how expensive is backing?

I mean, I'm pretty sure that spectra or power braid would be more expensive than the Dacron stuff they put on my reels, or am I wrong?

I think Dacron is generally about $10/100yds. This adds up unless you buy in bulk; especially with 7 or 8 reels to fill. Ard said it; buy some bulk spools once if you plan to fish a lifetime I guess.

Become friends with the staff at your local fly shop. Things like backing start to become real trivial to them when you come in all the time and talk with them.

I'm in my local Orvis shop pretty often and they have yet to charge me for backing. Went in the other day, got 200yards on one reel and 120yards on the other, no charge.

At Bass Pro, a 1000 meter spool of dacron trolling line is $42 for 20lb test. A 30lb spool is $50
