Umpqua UPG Daytripper

I am seriously considering the UPG daytripper fly box. anyone have one or seen em? if so what is your opinion and if you have one will you post a pic of yours. trying to get some ideas on what all will fit in these.

Save yourself $30 and buy one of the Allen fly boxes. They are C&F boxes at Walmart prices.

Also, I took a look at the UPG Daytripper box you mentioned and personally didn't like what I saw. Seemed like a lot of wasted space. It mentioned that it can also hold big streamers, but didn't really look that way.

The deal of the week right now at Allen is actually on their fly boxes. You can get 3 in assorted sizes for $20. I have 2 of their boxes (the Guide box and one other) and they are both quality construction and do their job well.

The Guide box is just about the best bassing fly box on the market in terms of price vs. quality.

the reason I was attracted to the daytripper was the "do all" fly box concept. I mostly fish for trout and only have a few bass flies so I was hoping to fit them in the same box as the others and just have one box.

I don't really see the "do all" aspect to it. It is simply a double sided fly box, with different foam pieces on each side, and each foam piece being geared towards small-medium flies.

I have this box from Allen that holds a TON of flies. If you wanted a little more inner space, you could do this one. Another one that will do the trick is this one. Its the same box as the UPG basically without the magnetic part which is just a waste of perfectly good foam space IMO.

Plus these are all a fraction of the price. If you really like the look of the UPG, than that's a good enough reason to buy it, but if you are looking for straight utility, I don't really see where it shines.

I have a Day Tripper box. It is a good fly box and considering how many flies you carry, a guy could definitely get away with it as a primary/only box.

The features that are nice make it a lot different from the standard boxes mentioned are the two magnetic areas on one side - they are perfect for dropping your midges and they stay put and you can easily pick one, unlike trying to insert a size 20 or 22 hook into a slit foam slot and worse, trying to get just one out of one of those slots. On that same side of the box, that big middle flat is perfect for soft hackles, wets, nymphs, and/streamers. (I had probably 50 flies in that area alone before a remodel job I did other night out of boredom.) Then there are two rows for standard dries or whatever you want.

The opposite side is just rows of slit foam, but with a couple larger areas to hold dries up to #10 if you had them.

It is pretty easy to organize this box side to side, i.e. wets/nymphs on one side, dries on the other, or whatever you like. Also the box is thinner than all other double sided boxes. I carry one Day Tripper and one C&F large box with compartments on one side and slit on the oppo. The Day Tripper holds more flies, is lighter and thinner than C&F.

What's stopping you? Just buy the thing, you'll like it. Also forgot to mention that it seals tight, water-tight.
