I was fishing yesterday in Idaho chasing yet again some Big Rainbows… As we walked down to the river’s edge, there were hundreds of Seagulls along the bank. Our crossing of the river put the gulls into flight and they left the area for some time. We had landed some great fish on white streamers… (small baitfish) during the early morning. Some time had passed without too much of excitement and then out of nowhere, the gulls return. Upon their arrival, bent rods began to arc towards the river. Three bent rods, three guys fishing, this is fun… After we all safely release the bows back into the river, I notice small schools of bait fish darting towards the surface. The gulls are going crazy. This is when it gets interesting. Gulls and Big Bows fighting over baitfish. As the gulls would dive to take make a kill, a Big old bow would break the surface and hit the gull in chest. I witnessed this a few times, thinking it was simply the gulls and fish going after the same meal and meeting on impact. After putting down the rods and watching more closely, It honestly looked as if the bows were making a deliberate effort to scare away the gulls. On more than one occasion, we witnessed a gull floating on the surface (not currently feeding) only to get pushed up out of the water by a large head of a Rainbow trout. This was not a nudge, but a violent smashing of fish and feather. Watching the battles unfold most definitely added some excitement to an already great day of fishing… Because I have never experienced this before, I wonder if any of you have ever witnessed anything similar. Thank you
