Default Fly Fishing Schools?

Anyone ever use an Orvis fishing school? I really only have saltwater experience and want to start some mountain trout fishing. There is a school in Asheville on the Biltmore Estate, thought it would work out to bring my wife and she can do the spa and winery while I am at the school, would do the estate tour together. Kind of pricey, but if I can get some good info and keep the wife happy at the same time, might be worth it. Other choice is hiring a few guided days and being in the dog house.

I can't speak for the Orvis class, but as someone who is only on their second year of fly fishing A day on the water I normally fish, with a guide was more helpful than any class I took. I think the part of it that I found most helpful is it gave me a comfort zone So I could show up to the river and not feel so lost haha.

If your goal is focused on learning then I'd do the school. You'll be with people who specialize in teaching, not just getting you to catch fish. If you go with a guide ask a lot of questions before signing up. Try to figure out if the guide is a good teacher. Some guides are great teachers some are not. Even those that are might need you to let them know you want to learn. I know a lot of people who love pulling out the fish pictures but have no idea what fly they used to catch the fish. You can do many days of a guided trip and catch a lot of fish but not learn much.

NC,

I think you might want to PM Jackster. He lives in NC, is a certified casting instructor, has been teaching casting for many years, and does a whole lot of fishing there. I'm sure he would know of the best schools (and guides) around.
