I'm interested in subscribing to a fly fisherman's magazine. I live in Idabel, Oklahoma and I am very new to the sport. I'm looking for practical information on mainly freshwater fly fishing. I'm interested in trout, bass, carp, or any species I can catch near me; nothing exotic yet.

I would suggest going to a public library and seeing what they have for fly fishing books and teaching DVD's first. What you need is beginner's information and you will waste a lot of money trying to get that from a magazine.

See if you can find some books by Dave Whitlock. He lives in Oklahoma now and he writes about fly fishing for Bass. He has a book called LL Bean's Fly Fishing for Bass Handbook

See this on the Fly Fisherman site for flies.

Another book about fly fishing for rough fish is "Fishing for Buffalo" by Rob Buffler and Tom Dickson.

You can also go to The New Fly Fisher at http://www.thenewflyfisherezine.com and sign up for their FREE online ezine. All you need to do is create an account. Then you have access to every back current and back issue on your computer, tablet, or mobile phone. I really like it, and really wish more magazine companies would do this. I am a longtime subscriber to In-Fisherman magazine, and (this used to make my ex-girlfriend insane LOL) I really don't throw issues away because there always just might be some info regarding a fishing situation that I am in. ;)

May I suggest "hanging around" this forum. Plenty of info, good and not-so-good:D, and it'll kill any and all of your free time. Especially if you follow any of the links into the black hole that is YouTube.

I've always been partial to Flyfishing and Tying Journal. It's not as glossy and fancy as some but is usually full of good information written by outstanding fisherman like Hughes, Hafele, Whitlock, Leeson, Skip Morris, Schollmeyer...the list goes on. It's fairly "Northwest-centric", so lots of info on Oregon and Washington with a real affinity for the Deschutes River. But there's enough variety to keep it interesting.

Fly Fisherman Magazine is too preachy for my tastes, but Charlie Craven is a badass.
