  1. Default Just got my first fly rod rig!

I got some nice birthday $ that I wasnt expecting and made the jump....I went to the local fly shop and walked out with a 2 pc. Sage Launch 9' 5 wt. with a Ross Flystart (2?) Reel that they rigged up for me. I have a friend who fly fishes who is going to give me some pointers and the fly shop owner told me to come by for some free pointers soon (I showed up right before they were closing)....pretty stoked to have a Sage Rod and am hoping it gets me some smallies & trout!

hey guys i "whipped it around" for 20 minutes this afternoon- I can cast a good 15 feet probably, hehe. I am not going to really try too much with it until i can get some pointers from my buddy and then I'll be heading back to the fly shop for pointers- dont want to develop too many bad habits....I am excited to learn! I for some reason had to have a Sage and the TFO rod I was considering wasn't much cheaper considering it didnt come w/ a rod case and the Sage does

    welcome aboard,

WOW what an awesome birthday gift - I guarantee you will love this beautiful art - especially given such a great rod! All the best with your lessons, it will lessen the learning curve somewhat.

well i can throw it about 20 feet on a good cast- not getting the end of the line to flip over really well when I cast- my biggest obstacle right now is stopping and 10 on the forward cast- I dont really cast much i'm really trying to practice stopping at 10 and not letting the line sink and lose too much energy on the forward motion. I havent had a lot of practice time and have a friend that can give me pointers- and i'll be headed back to the fly shop sometime when i feel like i wont embarass myself in their front lawn and get their feedback

Practice your stops without your rod in hand. You can also practice with
just the handle (butt section) in your hand. Practicing your stops with line
on the rod will cause you to expect that line to cast. When that expectation
is not met, all sorts of weird things begin to occur.

Think of your stops as a short punch. Don't break/flex your wrist during the
punch. You know that high school game where you hold your fist 6 inches
from someone's arm, and then punch? Think along those lines.

This guy gets right to the point, and if you do as he does, you'll cast as he
    does !
