Thread: Small Flies & Tippets - Thinking Outside The Box

Default Small Flies & Tippets - Thinking Outside The Box

As I mentioned in another thread the other day, I had some issues trying to tie on a #16 to 5X tippet. Conditions were quite damp, so my glasses were fogging and the light was waning.

As a thought, I'm going to try something different.

I'll sit in comfort in my deck chair with a roll of tippet and a few choice flies, where conditions will be perfect and light or vision won't be an issue. I'll tie an 18" section to each fly and then once at the pond / stream, I'll just tie that to the leader with a very easy to tie Double Surgeon's Knot.

I figure I'll store these on the vest chest patch for easy reach when I want to use them. Yes, I'll have 5 or 6 superlight lines in close proximity so while it is possible I'll end up with a nice tangle, I figure it's worth a try.

When I want to take off the fly in use for any reason, I'll just snip off that section of tippet at the fly and at the leader, then if this works, tie on a new section of tippet to each used fly another time at home.

    Thoughts?

    Jamie.

Jamie, there is a sweet little piece of gear I use when guiding.
Tackle buddies, makes, essentially, a rubber dowel divided into sections, with a small rubber hook sticking out of the side.
You hook the dropper on the rubber hook, then wind the tippet around the dowel.
Then just hook the lead fly into the rubber dowel.
The small buddy has 8 sections. When we have a problem (lose our stuff on a snag),
I tie one knot and we're back in the game with two flies.
    Works for me!

    Jim
Ultimately, it's not catching fish that satisfies, but knowing how.
