    I gave up using split shot myself. Mostly just wanted to lighten my vest. Found a putty style weight like JoeD mentioned and have used it ever since. It's made by Loon and called Deep Soft Weight. It becomes pliable from the heat of your hand and turns hard once it touches the water. Just roll it in your fingers to put it on or take it off, can be reused. It is non toxic as well so you don't have to worry about adding lead to the watershed.
