I'm using rubbing alcohol to protect my fly tying materials from bugs. Anyone know of any serious problems with this?
I have some small 1oz. jars with metal screw-on lids. I've put a piece of paper towel in the jar and get it fairly wet with alcohol, but not dripping. I've put a series of holes in he lid. I put these alcohol jars in the zip-lock bags with my fly tying materials.
I've tested that the alcohol kills some bugs (beetles) in a test bag.
I've let the inside of a bag saturate with alcohol vapor, then opened it with a flame at the opening. No fire.
Once the materials are removed from the bag, the alcohol smell quickly dissipates.
Does anyone see any problem with using alcohol to protect fly tying materials. I can't imagine the alcohol vapor harming the materials. And, I can' imagine much of anything, plant or animal, being able to live in the strong alcohol vapor environment.
I've read some folks complaints about using mothballs or cedar chips. Perhaps these folks might like to try the alcohol jar.
Mothballs are flammable, cedar chips are flammable, and alcohol is flammable, so take common sense precautions.
