First thought under fly lines but really nothing to do with them.
Have at times and of late seen 20 lb dacron backing being suggested to newbies. Both these people and those that don't know better yet. Should know this about 20lb dacron. It abraids.
That is way , way way faster than 30lb. That's why it hasn't been on any of my reels for years. I do have gel spun on most reels now, some still w/30lb dacron.
Easy to see for oneself. Cut two pieces of backing. One 20lb the other 30lb , about 2' lemghts. Wrap one end around hand pass other though snake guide on rod. Now wrap loose eend around other hand. Saw back and forth. Simulate line running over guides with bent rod or fish on. 20 or 30 seconds will do (any more 20 might break). Do this with both lines. And look at them under magnification. The 20 lb will look shredded.
If it scares you as much as it did me. Your 20 lb will be in junk pile soon. Or used to fill up spools for things that.don't get past fly line.
