Thread: After the cast

  1. Default After the cast

I am a newbie to flyfishing. I can cast and can catch a few trout. Anyone have tips on setting the hook (usually while nymphing) and then reeling in the fish?

  2. Default After the Cast

The hookset for nymphing needs o be quick snap of the rod tip. It is important to do it quick rather than hard to avoid breaking the tippet. As far as reeling in, the general rule I follow for everything from Trout to Tarpon is never put a fish on the reel unless it puts itself on the reel. In other words play it by hand until it takes out the extra line. More fish are lost while trying to crank up 40 feet of slack line than at eny other time.
