I sometimes feel that my modest Okuma Cascade combo's reel has too much line on it and I was wondering first if I should, and if I can, what is the best way to trim some line off of the reel? I was thinking that I may might to trim some line backing off, is this going to cause problems?

On your reel, between the line and the line guards, you need to have space of about the thickness of a pencil

Go ahead and strip the line off, then cut the backing back enough to make it happen.

There's a bunch of good knots that you can use to reattach backing to line
Most common is the nail knot.
I use a loop2loop connection with a whipped loop in the line and a bimini twist in the backing.
