Has anyone ever tried using braided fishing line (like power pro) as a leader or tippet for dry flies? It seemed like it might be the perfect material, it floats better than other materials, it's more supple and it's opaque which some think is more natural looking compared to clear mono to fluoro.
Anyway I order some cheap spools and put together a leader and tippet and tried it last night. Results are promising. It casts well, lands softly and definitely floats better than other leaders. I never got the "plop" sound from ripping a leader out of the water. The only downside so far was that it's hard to thread that soft line thru a small hook eye. You'd have to use hooks with large eyes if you wanted to do this full time.
I used 3 sizes to make the 6' leader (150 lb test, 65 lb test, and 20lb test) and terminated it with a tippet ring. I used 6lb test for the tippet. It was really dark last night so it was hard to tell exactly how the leader was working, plus the leader is black. I did catch more creek minnows than normal, that seems to be all I have in the stream down the street. The real test will be on wild trout, but that won't be for a few weeks.
