    Default Adding tippet

    Hello,
I know this has been answered before, but I can't find it.
    I have 6' left of a 2x tapered leader. Can I add 3' of 5x?
    Someone posted a formula once.
    Thank you in advance.

Nice fish! Do you have anymore pictures of it lying in the dirt?
As publicity increases so does the propensity of tripping over yards of mono attached to a Dipsey sinker.

You'll need to taper it down to 5x or you'll have a hell of a time trying to cast it and turn it over, plus your knot won't tie right with that big of a size difference. If you only have 6ft left of a 2x leader your current diameter is probably in the 0x or larger range. Add 12" 2x, then 6" of 3x and 4x each then another 18" or so of 5x.

Agreed, I keep a tippet/leader gage in my vest for rebuilding leaders. Then I can determine the diameter of the line at the end of the leader and build down from there with confidence that that the taper will provide the proper transfer of energy.

Why not just loop on a 5x tapered leader?

Hey, you're all filling in the facts. I didn't see mention of dry fly. Maybe it's a nymph rig, wet fly or even a streamer rig. The need for proper taper in those rigs can be a moot point. So when asked "Can I add 3' of 5x [onto 2x]" the only answer, assuming one can tie a knot, is yes.

I'm with cwb, just tie a loop at the end and loop to loop on 3 feet of whatever tippet you want. I cut off the tippet and install a loop in every leader I buy, before I even use them. This way I get a season or two of hard use out of my leaders.

Wow I have a totally different approach. Most of my fishing is on a yearly big fishing trip so I spare no expense. I usually use one or two leaders per day. When I can get a 3 pack of rio tapered leaders for $14-$15, I'll buy 3 3-packs and use a new leader every day of my trip. No worries about bad tippet knots or the loop causing a wind knot. Just loop on the tapered leader to my looped fly line and I'm ready to go. Never lose fish due to breakage that way.
