After reading the thread on expensive leaders, many of you advocate the use of tippet rings. Last spring, I ordered some tippet rings from a online discount fly company. When I tried to rig them up, I used clinch knots on both sides (leader and tippet) When I tested the knots, either the leader knot or the tippet would break. Knots were saliva lubed.
I assumed that the leader or tippet was rotten. I bought new leaders and tippet and the result was the same. When I tied on tippet with a surgeons knot, I was good to go.
I assume the discount company's ring were not smooth and were cutting the mono. Whadaya think? Faulty rings or faulty knot tying?
