I always have several rods in the back of my Jeep along with my gear. This time of year, I take advantage of it often. I work ten minutes from a good stretch of water and have taken several lunch breaks on Boulder Creek this summer, and I drive by another good river on my way to and from work which I often fish for an hour on my way home.

Always a rod in the truck, as a backup, if for nothing else.

Maybe one of the cheap beginner sets that Wally world and Amazon sells would work?
You can put together a fishable rig for fifty bucks...
$25 for an Eagle Claw Featherlight rod
$15 for a cheap but functional reel
    $10 for a made-in-China Maxcatch fly line

The Featherlight rods are a hoot. Despite having a selection of higher-priced rods, I fished all afternoon yesterday with the 8' 5/6 (rigged with a WF7F line).

Oh man I wish I lived in a place where I NEEDED to keep a rod stashed in my car. Unfortunately any fishing I do has to be a well planned excursion.

What's the problem with the heat? I keep three rods and all my reels in my truck all season long. Reels in their pouch in a backpack. Rods in their tubes under the backseat.

Anyway, always have my fly fishing gear with me in the truck--not all of it but what I use majority of the time. Make a lunch and off I go. That would be three rods...

The Eagle Claw was one of the rods I'd saved in my Amazon wish list.

I kept some *gasp* spinning rods in my vehicle for a while. Tossed some gotcha lures at lunch more than once.

Fly rod sounds like a great idea. Couple with some closers and/or poppers, I might pick up an errant red or speck in the afternoons or at lunch.

I'd even take bait fish. I'm not picky.

Since it takes at least 3 hours to get to fishable trout water there isn't much chance that I will just happen to drive by. So there isn't any point to keeping any gear in my car. I wish there was and it would be awesome to fish on the way home from work but that isn't possible here in SoCal.
My best vacation is your worst nightmare. After all, it's only really fun if it is at least Type 2 fun.
