Default New Species of Brown Trout discovered in Scotland

”The study, led by Prof Eric Verspoor, found four genetically, ecologically and visually distinctive species that have evolved in the loch over the last 10,000 years.

One of the species, a “Profundal Benthivore", has not as yet been reported to occur in any other loch in the brown trout's native range.“

Nice fish! Do you have anymore pictures of it lying in the dirt?
As publicity increases so does the propensity of tripping over yards of mono attached to a Dipsey sinker.

Interesting article.I wonder if the new species will always be in the dark deep waters of the loch or eventually be found in mid or surface water?Probably no reason for it to leave the deep but still interesting.

What else is lurking beneath the waves?

The large eyes of 'Profundal Benthivore' and light colouration are, perhaps, the most obvious differences and suited to a low light environment but I noticed that both pictures of the deep water bottom feeder show fish with a distended abdomen - compared to the others, which I would recognise as more familiar in shape.
I wonder if this is related to diet?

Perhaps their diet is more mollusc-based than invertebrate, requiring longer in the stomach to digest? Or maybe they habitually swallow small stones when bottom-feeding and have evolved with a larger stomach to accommodate?

It's a shame they used such a tatty example for the 'Wide Ranging Fish Eater'. 'Capt'n Fishy' posted some of his ferox photos here. Take a look at the teeth of the first fish on post 12! Some beautiful fish there, too.

I once spent an hour or so perched above Loch Ness searching for unusual species (of Plesiosaurus) to no avail.
