I live in KY which is kind of the transition point between the Midwest and the Southeast. The closest options for me are the big box stores as well. We do have two fly shops in Louisville, two in Cincinnati right on the northern border, and some of the best shops in the country 3 hours away in E. TN and W NC. I feel pretty blessed for those options! But I get it with rod testing too. Ive bought plenty of rods without testing them first and so far haven't had any duds. Fortunately, the closest Cabela's carries Sage, and there are two Orvis shops within an hour and a half. I regularly drive 2+ hours for trout without thinking twice, not sure why I complain about driving to fly shops.

Haha, straight up laughed at this...
I realize it sounded like I was whining a bit with the initial post, but my point was I would drive quite a way too, with a chance to try some equipment. This shop really is a unicorn around here. Don't know why I would complain about driving to the Fly Shop either. Especially when I'm lucky enough to have a wife that says just go....

If I may chime in, make sure you actually cultivate a relationship with someone in the shop that you trust/like. A good shop is able to make a lot of people who walk through the door feel comfortable. But someone you know well enough to actually trust is the best that a shop can offer. I hope you have a long relationship with the new shop.

A little follow up. I have struck up a friendship with Kevin the owner, his knowledge has been invaluable. I have now happily purchased a Douglas DXF in a 9' 8wt. I really couldn't tell much of a difference between it, and the more expensive Sky. Possibly the Sky is a little faster action rod? Since this original post I have been to the driftless area for the 1st time a few weeks ago and will be going back next week.

I am surrounded by fly shops, and I am blessed to have so many within an hour drive. So if the closest one doesn't have what I'm looking for, and I generally already know if they do or don't, I just go to the next. The closest one is ten minutes away, and three more within 45 minutes, and more between 45 min. to an hour. There's a joke I heard that fly shops are almost becoming like Starbucks. Funny, but only to a point.

Closest fly shop is 2 hour drive... I have never test cast a rod in my life, and have only ever bought one off the shelf. If you do enough research, and talk to enough people it's not too difficult to narrow down what style/action/speed you might like. I have been quite satisfied with my blind purchases.
