Thread: Hillbilly Sonar

  1. Default Hillbilly Sonar

When I am in my Toon/tube I love to deep nymph. At times I will use a 30' leader. The thing is, you need to know where the bottom is, so sonar is a must
But I went to Sportsmen's today and I saw these.

Okay, I know ICE FISHERS are familiar with these, but fly fishers, this could be good.
The colored part is lead and it is about the same diameter as a pencil (maybe a little bigger)
So, clamp it over the leader, let it slide to the ground, then raise about a foot and set the indicator. Bring it back up and stow it. Know you know how deep it is.

That's a pretty good idea. I just use a string with a weight that I lower over the side once I anchor up, but that isn't as accruate as your device. Going to have to get me one!
