Can ice (A lot of ice) built up on your fly line, and guides harm your fly line?
This ice makes a horrable sound when a strip my line.

chucko: good question, I have no idea. I usually fish midges during the winter so I'm not really stripping my line in so I can't recall if I ever heard the sound you describe.

    Chucko,

I do admire your willingness to battle the elements and I must ask, are you catching fish in these icy conditions? If so I wouldn't let the ice bother me but generally speaking once the temperatures fall below 32* I wait for them to rise above 34* or so before I fish.

If there happen to be a fresh bunch of steelhead in I'll bend that rule and face the weather no matter what, if I'm catching fish.

I fish still water lakes just as soon as the ice is off. I catch a wide variety of fish Bass, Wipers, Walleye, ect. Even Bluegill!
I use mostly floating line with heavy flies to get down where the fish are. I'm good for about four cast untill theres so much ice on my guides and my fingers freeze I'll have to stop for a while.
Anyway the cold is gone now in Eastern Nebraska. Now It's The Dog gone wind I'm fighting!

I think age is directly related to how warm it has to be before i fish. When i was 20 twenty degree weather wasn't a problem, now i am 50 i like fifty degree weather.

Yeh!!!! Theres no doubt, it's pretty hard fishing with your fingers in your pockets most of the time!
Last weekend, the temp was in the 60's and I picked a fight with 30 + crappie in two hours! Fun! Fun! Fun! Today..... 32 degrees! !@%*#!!
