  1. Default Looking for fly to replicate this 3" Tube.

I have a lot of luck with this 3" rubber tube in the rivers. I was thinking what if there was a fly that could replicate it.

Hey, looking at that the first thing that comes to mind is....using a dark yellow spinnerbait skirt for the tail. I would use a big streamer hook maybe larger than a 6. Weight it down with .30 lead free wire up the whole hook shank. Then make a thick body all the way up the hook with a dark yellow superfine dubbing over the wire.

Im sure thats not the best idea out there but it's an idea. I am not that creative when it comes to creating new patterns.

Hope that gives you some idea.

I agree. but at three inches long you would probably have to tie it on a 1/0 hook and throw it with a 7 or an 8WT.
The best way to a fisherman's heart is through his fly.

I would have to agree about the tube being a great fish producer, that is why I created a variation of the Wolly Bugger. Instead of the Marabou at the back I tie in two rabbit strips with some sili legs and I use a Conehead design or Barbell eyes and fish it almost identical to when I had a spinning rod and fished tubes.

First thing that I thought too, especially when in the water.

I'll bet you get close to the 3" in the water on approx #6 3X L streamer hook.

You might also want to try (What Orvis Calls) a Chuck and Duck Sculpin. I them up a little beefier but they do very well for smallmouth. Its basically the same thing as a bugger but with the barbell type eyes as the weight and they are usually a little larger than the bugger. Try getting or tying some up on a #4. Good luck!
Tried to upload a pic but it wouldn't upload. Check it out at

It reminds me of a Gummy Minnow...but I like the woolly bugger.

    Hi sonicimpulse,

You can buy these bodies from Cabela's. They are 2" long. I would run a big streamer hook into the body with a little lead wire glued to the hook. Just enough to sink it. Then tye off at the nose to hold the hook in place. Some would not call it a fly but that is up to you. You might also experiment with a keel hook.
