ive always used a heavy shooting head that i got in seattle about 30 years ago for fast deep water when i fished for steel head... ive been trying to get the hang of a float line with long leader and heavy fly with indicator, and i agree it really helps tell when youv got a fish chomping on that fly.. do any of you use sinking lines any more? the fish are on the bite here in montana as the ice is going off, and i guess to find out, ill try both.. but i was wondering what the average fly fisherman was using in fast water or at least where its tough to get the leach down to the fish becouse of wind , physical characteristics of the area fished etc.. thanks dave...

I use sinking lines or a sinking leader in moving water to fish streamers, but usually not anything else. I know that some guys will use them to fish nymphs, I just haven't really learned that technique.

If I were fishing a stillwater for trout, I would probably give the sinking gear a try, I just haven't had that need yet.
