I was wondering how much material to get for a start up order?
Be reallistic on what you need. You will need to figure out which flies that you are going to tie. Get the materials for those. Make sure to get the colors that you use. Also get the hooks in the size runs that you use.

For example, for Elk Hair Caddis dry flies, you may want to give yourself some options. You may want a few different sizes of TMC 100 hooks. You may want to have a few different colors of dubbing or buy the prepacked dubbing kits.

You might want to try buying stuff for 1, 2 or 3 patterns at a time, in stead of trying to get a whole bunch of stuff all at once ---- or worse, buying a whole bunch of random stuff

Look at the recipes for tying some basic flies that you'll actually use and get the material to tie them.

Some popular patterns to start for trout that are not too difficult and use relatively inexpensive materials that are also used in many other patterns would be stuff like:
Woolly Buggers
Pheasant Tail Nymph
Gold Ribbed Hares Ear Nymph

As you work your way through some of the basic patterns you'll also be building up and inventory of different types of hooks and sizes, and materials.

Give us an idea of what you'd like to tie and we could probably suggest a shopping list...
