Default Try one with out a vice

I was reading that Carrie Stephens used too tie the streamers with no vice! so I thought it should be a fun thing to try

The tools used (other hand was required for the camera)

The fly produced with no vice

Have a go its not as hard as you might think just takes longer the fun part will be seeing if it stays in one piece after a fish mauls it

I have a hard enough time tying most flies with a vice let alone without one. Nice looking fly.

Chris: I'll bet that was a fun exercise and resulted in a pretty nice looking streamer.

    Chris,

You are no doubt following a natural metamorphic course. I got into tying flies by hand in the mid 80's after seeing Lee Wulff do it. I did it quite a bit and it made me a topic for conversation among some friends. Honestly, it is a good exercise but I prefer a vise for anything beyond a Bi Visible in size 12.

    Ard,
I learned to tie without a vise from Lee too. Only difference I sat with him doing it in the early 70's. He was a master tyer.

    Hi Chris,

There were some hand vises made for tying. One that I have a picture of is the Veniard Croydon Hand Vise. It is a neat little vise that fits in one hand. I thought about making one but never got to it.

Here is a link to a book photo that shows the Vise. It is number 3 in the tools photo. You have to scan up slightly to see it.
