...HELLLLLLLLLLP! Wooley Bugger hackle!

Hey folks,

I bought some strung Chinese saddle hackle (black) to tie some black and orange buggers (for brown trout and small mouth). Well the hackle fibers are waayyyyyyyyyyyyy too long (~ 4x the hook gap on a size 8 streamer hook). I've tried trimming them down to a more appropriate size, but they still don't quite look right. Anyone got any suggestions, other than going out and trying to buy some better quality hackle??

ALSO: Anyone got a link to a site with a nice tutorial for a autumn splendor?

You can skip palmering the entire body and tie the hackle in as a collar or a more difficult route would be to split your thread open and slide the feather into the gap and cut off the stem so the hackle barbs are the length you want then spin your thread bobbin to tighten it all up and palmer the body brushing the fibers back as you go. It'll be fairly sparse and take some time but it'll save a trip to the shop and some cash.

If you're going to buy wooly bugger hackle that way, you'll want to open up the package in the store and see it there's a decent number of skinny hackles in there. If the shop fusses at you for doing that, don't given them your money.

Good advice from BigCliff, those bugger packs are ideal. I didn't think of what WT mentioned, but a dubbing loop would also work.

Another idea, have you tried tying them in tip first and wrap up the shank to the eye? You might find some smaller barbs at the tip of the feather and then by the time you get to the eye, you've got some big ones for a collar.

I sometimes like a larger hackle on buggers, how big is too big? Can you post a photo of one tied up?

That thread should walk you through it. I use photobucket to host my photos. You can't directly upload from your computer, you must use a the web to host the photos.
