Poor quality materials and tools are destined to discourage beginner tiers and cause greater expense when the time comes to replace them.

My simple guess is you're winding it on the hook 'backwards.' Bumps on one side and pretty flat on the other. Ya-ya, I have to remember which way to spool too; odd are I'll get it wrong 60% of the time if I haven't been at the bench for awhile.

I'm going to guess you're right handed so when you tie same in the 'bumps' should be facing you and you're winding the material (looking down from the hook eye) 'clockwise,' aka "away from you" in real life. One product vs the other? Other's will have a better call on that one save for a big tie, I go metal, a lighter the other.

As in like now, had to give that a try ..... So many boxes full of these things 'more' will bring little to the Party. Have I been at this too long?

go with metal...its the only way to maintain the embossed look. mylar will stretch out or rub out if you wrap it too tight.

I'd be interested to know where you got the metal stuff too. I just did a salmon fly (Rosy Dawn) with silver embossed metal tinsel... but i need more, both gold and silver.

Yes....good embossed metal tinsel is getting harder and harder to find. My supply of French embossed tinsel is getting low.....especially the silver. I put at least 2 coats of clear varnish on the tinsel and let it dry before finishing the streamer. I usually spend a couple of hours just making tinsel bodies on different sized streamer hooks and when I need to make some streamers, I always have some already covered with embossed tinsel.
All I can find in my region is mylar tinsel and I hate the stuff.
