Question New Vise: DK Kingfisher vs HMH SX

Hi,

Looking to get into fly tying and have narrowed it down to a couple of vises. Looking at the Dyna King Kingfisher and the HMH SX. Wanting to tie streamer, terrestrial patterns for trout as well as some saltwater and salmon flies. Not really interested in tieing anything smaller than size 10 or so (too small and tedious!)

Would be nice to have the tilt feature of the nicer Dyna Kings or the HMH Spartan but that is getting fairly pricey.

Any thoughts on these two vises and if this style is appropriate for the flies I'm looking to tie? Any thoughts appreciated.

-Dan

Hi Dan,

For what you specify tying I would scoop this Thompson up in a heartbeat! I've been tying on Thompson vises for many years and still keep one clamped to the bench.

Use the leftover money for materials & bobbins / thread, etc.

If you really want tilt and the ability to rotate the fly Anvil Apex is about the same price as the others you mentioned. Stainless steel made in USA

if you are truely undecided on which one to get, call one heads and the other tails, flip the coin and buy the winner.

or go to your local fly shop and sit down with their demo vises, tie some flies and buy the one that suits you best

I think I'm going to hold out and get the HMH Spartan. Gives me the most versatility. Thanks for the replies.
