you could also start out tying on the gaelic supreme mike martinek hooks in a
6xl and 8xl lengths in different sizes

Gaelic Supreme Mike Martinek's Carrie Stevens Rangeley Streamer Hook < Gaelic Supreme < Fly Tying Hooks

since you are just starting out tying this style of flies, theres no reason for you to try and get all of the hooks mentioned in the global fly fisher article (they do show up from time to time on ebay)(i bought some sealy hooks at a fly tying show)
Poor quality materials and tools are destined to discourage beginner tiers and cause greater expense when the time comes to replace them.

I'm going to start out with two styles, and sizes, probably the two Ard recommended. It will grow from there!

Thanks Gary, I'll look into those as well. Beautiful flies, as usual.

I really like the mustad #36680 but she's a gonner. Long shank, limerick bend and a tapered down eye. So goes the fickle fly tying market.

I went out of the box with this hook.... the eye is adjustable if you need the look. Bend it with a pair of flat pliers.
    In action....

I like the look of those flies, number 1 is different, never saw one like that.

I like the Daiichi 2220, perfect size for me, they seldom get fouled up and have a nice wide hook gap.

I went with 1750 and 2340 - that's the 6xl with a down eye, and couple spools of embossed tinsel. Then I went over to The Feather Emporium dot com and got lost for an hour! I've perused the site before but Wow! That site is amazing, I can't believe how many variations of rooster and hen capes and saddles there are. Really cool but really dangerous, I couple spend as much on feathers as a new rod pretty easily.

I stayed in control and got a few different options to see how they are; a small streamer pack of Whiting Coq de Leon, a Whiting American grizzly pack, and a beautiful silver badger hen cape. And he shipped them out within an hour!
