    Default Grizzly Shrimp

Del Canty and Joe Butler caught some monster trout, world records, on the "Grizzly Shrimp". If you have crayfish in your water tie up something similar. My take Sz. 6..........

I like it, very nice. Ok, now give up on the materials for the viewing audience.
There is a need to fish, to be in the water. It soothes the soul.

I don't think the recipe is all that sacred, it's the shape and form that's important. Fur with guard hairs for a tail, squirrel, badger, rabbit etc......, I used fox. A grizzly hackle for a palmer rib and a chenille body (I used med. olive). Extra guard hairs and fur are tied in tips first before the body and hackle and are humped over the body for a carapace and tied at the head of the fly. Feel free to tie a big head with thread.

Think crayfish when you put it together.

I had one tied by Joe Butler, but lost it to a nice rainbow one spring, many years ago. I'll try to scrounge up the photos. Had silicone legs as claws. Cool looking fly!

    Edited to add:
    Found it!

Here's my effort, tied on size 4 and weighted per Del and Joe's recommendation.

Interestingly, it seems that Del's Giant Grizzly Shrimp is a variation on Jack Horner's (creator of the Humpy) Brown Shrimp that was tied for estuarine salmon and steelhead in California and Oregon starting in 1938.
Here's a photo of a bunch of those I found online.

Updated to add another version of the Giant Grizzly Shrimp, this one with bead chain eyes.

It could pass for a baitfish pattern as well as a crustacean with this addition. Iím still baffled as to why the pattern has been all but forgotten as a producer of stillwater trout. Maybe itís still just a REALLY well kept secret!
