What size dumbbell eyes are you using on size 8 streamer hooks? I have medium. Is that too much weight?
This isn't actually true, but I think you meant something different. It's like a ton of steel compared to a ton of feathers. Both weigh the same but one will have a much greater volume and in the sizes these components are made, displacement won't affect the sink rate a lot, but the actual weight certainly can. Tungsten will get down faster, but comparing it to lead or brass, the tungsten is heavier in a smaller size. So, per equal size barbells, the tungsten will be heavier & sink faster with all other factors being equal.Tungsten really gets down a lot faster(like twice as fast) per equal weight as compared to lead or brass.
Interesting graph. First off let's assume that the graph is for pure lead(Pb) and tungsten(W). The graph shows a sink rate based on mass. To get the same mass of Pb as in a "x" mm W bead the bead of Pb you would need to be 1.7(x) times as big W. After all, a gram of Pb weighs the same as a gram of W but the Pb takes up more space or volume (less dense). So what I'm seeing in the graph is how bouyancy effects "weight" of x material in a shape(assume sphere). Pb must displace more water than W as it has more volume than W at any given mass of W. This also means Pd is more buoyant the W. Therefore Pb will fall slower, providing shapes are the same. So W is a great way of getting mass in a very small size and especially where Pb is prohibited. From the link. Metals, lead and tungsten, compared by weight, not volume.

Sounds on the heavy side, but like has been said. If that's whats needed..... do it.What size dumbbell eyes are you using on size 8 streamer hooks? I have medium. Is that too much weight?
On a related note, I bought a little digital scale about 6 months ago and that thing is great. Now I know about how heavy to make my nymphs and streamers. For example I make 3 sets of nymphs, one about .1-.2 grams, another about .2-.4, and then .4 to .5. Also I've found I don't like casting anything over about 1.5 grams when it comes to streamers. Also if doesn't matter if you mix up your beadheads and dumbbell eyes, just weigh them to get the right size. Thanks everyone! I looked up a chart online and found one. I had to bump down to the smaller eyes. It looks a lot better now.
