Tied my first fly ever today, supposed to be a beetle, think it came out ok for my first one.

I remember them having more red than this (don't have them here, but South Dakota and Maryland both had them), but that's the bug. Not sure if they are much on the food chain for fish?

the abdomen on the first 2 palomino midges is a long lost product from georgio benecchi called "new dub"

Beetles fish great, this past summer I used a foam pattern that Joni posted awhile back, extremely effective, it uses a black foam with an oil slick pattern on top and a peacock herl body.

Very cool.
I think I can do better at replicating the true box elder bug. Not sure if their habitat includes northern east coast islands. I read a little on them; apparently they excrete a fowl odor upon being crushed as a defense mechanism.
Anyone know if trout would avoid them for this reason? If they do no real point in pursuing the pattern, at least in red anyway.

With Euclid dumping the white stuff down here I had to tie up some beetles to conjure up memories of late summer/early fall on FSB.
