    Default Steelhead report 3/6/2012

I had one of those days today... Went two for four in a few hours time. Landed the two biggest Steelhead of the year so far. Temperatures are on the rise, snow is melting and the fish are starting to feed! I have been at it all winter and doing very well. The CFS on open rivers is still quite low, the temps haven't REALLY rose yet, stoneflies are hatching and the Steelhead are hitting! 40 degrees (or so it said on the weather channel) windy and mostly cloudy. All 4 fish hooked took a stonefly nymph size 10 on the dropper. Landed 2 beasts today. My day was cut short by some guys with spinning rods walking in front of me and a few other fly fishermen... right through the main runs. *sigh* I don't think they knew the river well, but hey I got to go warm up and have an early dinner.

Nice fish, James! The only thing that could have made the day better (besides landing the other two and the spinfishermen just not showing up) would have been the wings beating the Flyers rather than losing by a goal...

Any word on whether you're coming to the Midwest Expo? I'm looking to maybe get out and fish the Clinton River Friday morning if possible (or maybe early early Saturday morning) to get my steelhead for the week.

EDIT: I just looked at the map and realized that you may actually be farther away from the show than I am... damn UPers, hahaha.

It's rare that the smaller fish come off. Haha! Yeah I won't be able to make that unfortunately. Yeah the flyers are my most hated team. I like the wings and the sabres. I was happy with just the 2 fish. I'll be hitting the water again tomorrow early around sun up. I hope to land some decent ones tomorrow too. If the river would rise from some run off, the browns would start showing up. Let me know how your fishing goes!

A.J. what part of the Clinton River are you fishing? I am flying in tomorrow (Thursday) for the Midwest Fly Fishing show and most likely will be hitting the Clinton river for some Pike action back on my old stomping grounds. According to my buddies the Pike are in full force heading up the spillway from the lake. I haven't heard to much about the steelhead action near Yates cider mill.

Wow, nice fish! I'd love to get up there and fish that sometime. I'd thought about coming up next week, but unfortunately work has gotten in my way. Keep the pictures coming!

    Hi James,

It will be a while before the rivers thaw here but the sea run trout are on the top of the action list. I think the male has great color there. It is hard to find a place where someone won't walk into your swing no matter where you are at. I spend a lot of time just finding places here. Keep the eye candy coming, I may not be after them yet but it's good to look at what others are up to.
