I usually throw them back but sometimes its nice to have fresh grilled trout dinner.
I was just being facetious. Here in Utah, there has been no openers since the late 60's or so. 365 days of fishing. There are some small streams that are closed at certain times for the spawn. I'm just glad they did away with it here. I've seen pictures of opening day on some waters. Henrys Lake in Idaho has an opening day. Cluster f#$ if I ever saw one.
    Good luck.
I do like Ard's trout opener the best.
Life is not like a bowl of cherries. It's more like a jar of ghost peppers. What you eat today might burn your ass tomorrow...

I remember the season opener, we called it "Trout Day." It was a big deal for me not because I could wack and open trout, but because the only trout streams I lived near were closed to fishing until the last Saturday of April.

    Happy Trout Day, Michiganders!

I actually prefer the idea of having "openers", it really makes it like a holiday each one here in Michigan. As to crowds, frankly except for the "Gun Deer and Duck" openers, you really don't get them (and not speaking about non-date specific events like Steelhead, Salmon, Sucker and Smelt runs). The only time being you're going to specific places that are known for such.

Seriously, in Michigan hunting and fishing season openers are really great events as even the non-H&F community knows of them, some even celebrating them as well in their own way.

Lastly, the "Trout Opener" is also for many the "Up North" opener for for the more hard core who make the weekly migrations. Memorial Day weekend the UN opener for the casual Up-Northers.
